What to do when you experience symptoms or are worried about COVID-19

Where to direct inquiries regarding COVID-19

Which of the following is your situation?

If you have a primary care doctor and have the following:

  • Relatively mild cold-like symptoms such as a fever or cough Call immediately if you are pregnant, elderly, or have an underlying condition (diabetes, heart failure, a respiratory condition such as COPD, etc.), which could lead to the development of severe symptoms. In addition, call immediately if you are undergoing kidney dialysis, on an immunosuppressant or cancer-fighting drug, etc. If you do not fall into the aforementioned categories, call if symptoms persist four days or more.
  • Severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, severe sense of fatigue, or high fever Symptoms vary widely. If you think your symptoms are severe, or if you must continuously rely on a fever reducer or other medication to manage your symptoms, call immediately.

Call to consult your doctor or medical institution. (If you are concerned, please call your regular doctor or medical institution, even if you do not have any of the aforementioned symptoms.)

If the Novel Coronavirus Hotline or your primary care physician determines that you need to visit a COVID-19 outpatient consultation facility (for returnees with suspected symptoms and those in close contact with them) or a PCR test center.

A doctor will determine the need for a test. Wear a mask and avoid public transportation if possible.

After a doctor determines that a test is needed, you receive a PCR test at the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health or elsewhere, and you:

Test positive

You will be admitted to a designated medical institution for infectious diseases or a designated hotel for recovery. Other quarantine arrangements may also be possible.

Test negative

You will be asked to rest at home and see a doctor as necessary.

If your symptoms do not improve, consult your doctor or the Tokyo COVID-19 Consultation Hotline.
